Rappahannock Electric Cooperative - Home Resources
REC offers a do-it-yourself energy audit and a professional energy audit that provides advice on energy conservation measures and improving the overall thermal integrity of your home. The professional energy audit includes a visual inspection of the thermal qualities of the home including the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. The audit includes a list of retrofit recommendations and a computerized heat loss/heat gain analysis to help you decide which upgrades can benefit you the most.
Let REC manage your electric water heater's energy use with a load management switch and, in exchange, you'll receive free repairs to your water heater's electrical components. Repairs include replacing heating elements, thermostats and reset buttons. If you ever notice problems with your water heater, just contact us.
Using heat pump technology, in combination with traditional electric elements, these water heaters pull heat from surrounding air and transfer it to the tank. This innovative process creates the same amount of hot water as a traditional water heater, but can reduce energy consumption significantly. And by purchasing an ENERGY STAR-rated water heater from REC, you qualify for the federal tax credit for energy efficient building property that is limited to 30 percent savings through 2010 (up to $1500). For more information about purchasing your GE Hybrid water heater, please call 540-891-5910 or e-mail mgunnels@myrec.coop.
A new, more efficient water heater can cut that cost, especially if your current water heater is more than seven years old, leaking or constantly needing repair. REC can arrange delivery and installation of a new water heater, as well as give you up to 36 months to pay for it-interest free.
Transient power surges can happen any time, and, when they do, they can damage your valuable electronic equipment and appliances. HomeGuard® products' special two-stage protection guards against surges by combining a device at the meter with in-home devices at the outlet. It's protection backed by a "repair or replace" warranty.
Dominion Power - Energy Conservation
Get energy-efficient lighting with an instant, in-store discount on compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) from Dominion.
Get $40 for letting Dominion cycle on and off your air-conditioning system during periods of peak demand. You'll be helping your wallet and the environment. Dominion will install a "smart switch" on your outdoor air-conditioning unit or heat pump system. Since the work is performed on your outdoor unit, you don't even need to be home. We provide the equipment and the installation is free. During periods of high demand, we'll cycle your air conditioners compressor on and off for short periods. The fan will stay on circulating already cooled air. This occurs during the summer season between June and September. Typically cycling will occur for about 4 hours per event, between 2 PM and 6 PM, and will not occur on weekend or holidays. At this time, participation is open for residents in Alexandria, Arlington, Charlottesville, Falls Church, Northern & Eastern Fairfax County, Herndon, and the Springfield Area - other areas will follow.

By reducing the amount of power customers use during peak times, NOVEC can reduce by millions of dollars each year the amount of power it purchases. By joining the Load Management program, you help NOVEC hold down the cost of providing power. These savings are passed on to you in the form of CashBack, and lower operating costs.
