School District Recycling

GWRC sponsored a 1/2 day recycling symposium for local school districts, featuring presentations by Stafford and Spotsylvania school system personnel on the start-up and performance of their recycling programs, as well as speakers from Virginia Recycling Association, Keep Virginia Beautiful, Virginia School Board Association and others to recognize program ideas and resources available to support implementation of school recycling programs in Caroline, King George and the City of Fredericksburg. VA Green Lodging Program Meeting

GWRC and the Recycling Sub-committee are working with Fredericksburg Area Hospitality Council and special project committee formed by the Council to encourage membership voluntary participation in the Virginia Green Lodging Program.

 

VA Green Restaurant Program

GWRC and the Recycling Sub-committee are working with City Economic Development Office to identify target restaurant and other businesses in the downtown area that could participate in the Virginia Green Restaurant.

 

Mall Recycling Initiatives

Working with Management Office of Spotsylvania Towne Center, the regional recycling sub-committee is helping expand the recently implemented commercial recycling programs in the mall to other tenant operations in the Towne Center expansion area.

 

Military Recycling Projects w/ Dahlgren, Fort AP Hill, and Quantico

GWRC has invited Dahlgren NSWC, Quantico MCSB and Fort AP Hill to join the regional recycling sub-committee.  As a result of this, Fort A.P. Hill is negotiating with Spotsylvania County to handle sludge waste from the base as feedstock for County composting program and wood waste from the base may be added to volume collected by Caroline County to be processed as additional feedstock for Spotsylvania composting program.

 

Earth Day 40th Anniversary Celebration

GWRC staff are working with local environmental committees to sponsor annual Earth Day celebration.

 

HOA Outreach Initiatives

GWRC staff and the Recycling Sub-committee working with Landmark Management (residential HOA’s) and Thalhimers Real Estate (Commercial property management) to explore opportunities to facilitate wider implementation of  residential and office/commercial recycling programs.

 

Southern R-Board Feasibility (Spotsylvania and Caroline)

GWRC staff are is fostering staff-level discussions to identify opportunities to coordinate municipal solid waste and community recycling programs to achieve greater cost-effectiveness and higher recycling rate outcomes.

 

Arranging Tours of Local Recycling and Waste Management Facilities

GWRC and the Recycling Sub-committee visit local business operations to observe how these facilities function, and what obstacles there might be preventing or opportunities to expand the influence of these operations
